Day 1: Shelter Building
We have had a super first activity shelter building. Everyone showed great enthusiasm and worked really well as a team. Some very creative and successful shelters resulted! We had an action-packed evening, with night-time orienteering followed by songs, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows around the camp fire.
Day 2: Canoeing
We have spent the day on the river Esk, canoeing all the way down the river to Whitby harbour. The children were excellent in their teams, and we were able to explore up and downstream, and make the most of the high tide and wide river. We have all had a great day, although everyone is pretty tired now!
Day 3: Climbing and forest
We had a very misty start to the day, but soon warmed up with a felltop hike up the Cleveland Way before some challenging rock climbing. We then explored the boulders and forest areas, and the children made their own hot chocolate using Kelly Kettles in the woods. Evening activities have included dry-slope sledging and tuck shop - both very popular!
Day 4: We began as Marine Biologists, looking for living creatures in the rockpools at Runswick - we found 16 different creatures from Butterfish to Edible Crab - then we became Paeleontologists to search for fossils. The afternoon was beck scrambling - and everyone was very adventurous! This evening we have climbed on the low-ropes course on site, before having our Party and Talent Night. Another action-packed day!
Day 5: After watching the Solar Eclipse with pin-hole projectors, we set off to Orienteer in Maybeck forest. This was a great final activity to end the week, with opportunities to put into practice a lot of what has been learned this week about the landscape and outdoor environment, as well as giving some independence to the teams as they explored and followed their maps. Most groups went on to the longer routes, and everyone was successful at finding all the checkpoints.
Well done everyone for a fantastic and memorable week, great achievements and super teamwork at East Barnby 2015!
